The Sustainable Food and Farming team at ADAS supports food businesses in understanding risks due to poor soil health in raw material supply chains, and supports development of strategies for their suppliers to foster good soil health practices.  The team draw upon the expertise of ADAS’s soil scientists to help businesses apply the latest research and best practice throughout their supply chains. 

Goal 15: Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss.

Healthy soils are a prerequisite for sustainable food and farming, with soil management an integral part of managing land effectively to protect and conserve soil resources.

ADAS helps to promote best practice in soil and nutrient management, working with key stakeholders to identify areas of risk due to poor soils in supply chains leading to reduced productivity. Working alongside food businesses ADAS is able to recommend appropriate ways to influence supplier behaviour to ensure good soil management practices.   

Resilient soils are crucial in maintaining and improving productivity, minimising disruption of supplies due to extreme weather, ensuring product quality and ensuring reliability of supply. Good soil management practices can also support companies’ efforts to reduce their carbon footprint from primary production.

Our experts provide support to food businesses in the following ways:

  • Identify production areas most at risk of low productivity due to poor soil health
  • Raise awareness among key stakeholders along supply chain of importance of good soil health e.g. training, development of internal and external communications materials
  • Understand regulatory drivers influencing soil management practices
  • Support behaviour change for improved soil health through supplier engagement
  • Advise on efficient use and recycling of nutrients in crop production
  • Promote ways to enhance carbon content in soils to  mitigate climate change
  • Apply appropriate methods to capture and quantify data on producer soil health
  • Analyse data to prioritise action in high risk regions, for high risk products, high risk suppliers
  • Develop policies to promote good soil management practices within supply chains in conjunction with existing sustainability policies
