EIP Project

What is EIP-AGRI?

The European Innovation Partnership on Agricultural Sustainability and Productivity (EIP-AGRI) was initiated in 2012 by the European Union to support the ‘Europe 2020’ initiative for smart, sustainable and inclusive growth. This strategy aims to strengthen the relationship between research and innovation by offering a unique opportunity for new methodologies to be trialled by knowledgeable practitioners.

ADAS is supporting over 20 innovation projects to go through the EIP process in Wales, with 15 projects already underway.  Our combination of insight and practical experience, underpinned by robust, informed, science-based knowledge sets a strong foundation to be able to deliver such a wide range of projects, supporting farmers with their ideas and helping them navigate through the funding priorities.

ADAS facilitated projects include ‘Reducing Antibiotics use at Lambing Time’ which looked at tackling the global issue of antimicrobial-resistant infections in lambs. ‘Pasture for Pollinators’ is another project which focuses on increasing habitat for pollinator species that play a vital role within the UK agricultural industry. Finally, the ‘Cambrian Mountains Beef’ project has developed a short supply chain so that farmers can sell their produce directly to the consumer, eliminating the need for intermediaries and additional costs. For more information about all ADAS associated projects see the available links below.

EIP-AGRI programmes vary in across member states and regions; in Wales, there is grant funding of up to £40,000 available through the partnership for each project.  This funding contributes to specialist’s time, hire of essential equipment, coordination of projects, communication and dissemination of project approaches, technical advice and reporting on project milestones.

EIP projects in Wales must contribute to the expansion of knowledge in at least one of the following areas of the Welsh Government’s Rural Development Programme 2014-2020:

  1. Fostering knowledge transfer and innovation in agriculture, forestry and rural areas
  2. Enhancing farm viability and competitiveness of all types of agriculture in all regions and promoting innovative farm technologies and the sustainable management of forests
  3. Promoting food chain organisation, including processing and marketing of agricultural products, animal welfare and risk management in agriculture
  4. Restoring, preserving and enhancing ecosystems related to agriculture and forestry
  5. Promoting resource efficiency and supporting the shift towards a low carbon and climate-resilient economy in agriculture, food and forestry sectors
