Desk-based assessments

Archaeological desk based assessments

Archaeological desk-based assessments (DBAs) are often requested by local authorities to form part of planning applications for new developments.

These assessments cover all of the baseline heritage data relating to your site, and include:

  • Baseline data collection and assessment of Historic England datasets, Historic Environment Record Data and Conservation Areas
  • Analysis of relevant publications, grey literature reports, geological and topographical data
  • Historic mapping analysis
  • Historic aerial photography analysis
  • Site visit and walkover survey
  • Assessment of the potential for known or as yet unidentified archaeology to exist on the site
  • Assessment of the potential impact of the development on any archaeology present on the site

The desk-based assessment can be used to inform consultations with local authorities to ensure that any further archaeological evaluation or mitigation requested is proportionate to the impact of the development.
