Environmental Modelling

Environmental Modelling

ADAS has been producing environmental data, models and decision support tools for over 30 years. We use models and tools to maximise the value of data to our clients and to improve current or future management decisions.

The development of environmental models requires a thorough understanding of available datasets and the results of other published research. The data can be used to derive algorithms, which take large data sets and condense the information they contain to describe important trends. By combining algorithms, models can be developed that describe complex environmental systems. Data can also be used to specify the inputs to these models or the scenarios to be investigated, or to validate the model outputs. These models can then be converted into decision support tools to summarise the information into practical advice.

ADAS has established a strong track record in developing environmental models and tools, many of which are used nationally by policy makers and land managers (e.g. Farmscoper, NEAP-N, PSYCHIC, EAgRET).

Our services include:

  • Data synthesis
Review and analysis of available data and evidence to inform and enable the development of input datasets, models and validation datasets.
  • Scenario analysis
Employment and development of existing and new models as well as statistical analysis to assist the understanding and prediction of environmental scenarios.
  • System optimisation
Use of models to determine optimal solutions for systems, rather than pre-defined scenarios, e.g. the most cost-effective combinations of on-farm pollution control measures.
  • Quantifying the unknown
Use of models to determine the results for situations where measurement is impossible / impractical, e.g. to provide national coverage, determining the impacts of climate change or quantifying the impacts of changing one component within a complex system.
  • Design and assessment of regulation
Providing evidence-based guidance to policy makers on expected and potential impacts of regulation, based on the analysis of survey data, environmental data and modelling.
