Prime Minister Boris Johnson Launches the UN Climate Change Conference (COP26)

Published on

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has launched the next United Nations Climate Change Conference which will be held in Glasgow for two weeks from the 9th to the 19th of November 2020. The 26th Conference of Parties (COP26) will be attended by countries who have ratified the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), a treaty which came into force in 1994. The participating countries will assess progress on addressing climate change and will seek to agree on a new, long term deal to tackle rising temperatures. The COP26 event is also a critical milestone to update and align on progress since the Paris Agreement in 2015, which took place at COP21.

The United Kingdom, hosting the event for the first time, will put forward the President for the event who will take the role of leading the event successfully. The event is expected to be attended by over 30,000 delegates.

In a speech at the London Science Museum on the 4th February 2020, the Prime Minister (PM) announced the launch of the UN summit alongside declaring 2020 a “Year of Climate Action” in the UK. He emphasised the UK’s commitment to Net Zero Emissions by 2050 and stressed the need for every country to announce their own targets. The PM noted that the UK was the “first major economy to make that commitment” and commented that the UK has a responsibility to lead the way as it was the first country to industrialise.

Mr Johnson was joined on stage by Sir David Attenborough, who warned of the dangers of global warming and called for action "It's up to us to put us to put before the nations of the world what needs to be done...now is the moment."

There is a great deal of UK activity currently with respect to sustainability and Climate Change, and in the last couple of weeks, there has been the significant Committee on Climate Change Land Use Policies for Net Zero Report, and the subsequent launches in Parliament of The Agriculture Bill and The Environment Bill – which all have direct and material impacts on food production and the move towards a more sustainable system of agriculture and land management. Expect a significant level of policy momentum in the 10 months ahead as the UK Government aims to show the UK as a world leader.

The Government will aim to take a leading role as the host of the COP26 Climate Change Conference and it is expected that there will be a further announcement on key topics – such as like the banning of internal combustion engine (ICE) cars by 2035 – brought forward by 5 years.

ADAS will continue to monitor future developments and bring updates and insights on what the impacts of the summit and the climate commitments the UK makes will be.
