About the project
WWF-UK are looking to carry out an independent and neutral assessment of the potential of the insect industry, including environmental impacts, economic feasibility, and potential to valorise waste and/or by-products. The report will identify the current barriers to scaling-up insect protein and explore how both WWF and/or other stakeholders might collaborate to overcome such barriers, particularly around regulation, via a series of recommendations which will be developed in the report. The report will be published publicly online and will function as a piece of evidence to support and guide future WWF advocacy activities.
The project, funded by WWF-UK’s ground-breaking partnership with Tesco, was awarded to an ADAS led consortium. You can find out more about the project in our previous news article.
As part of the project, ADAS are engaging with stakeholders across the industry including:
- insect producers
- feed suppliers and mixers
- livestock farmers, particularly pig and poultry
- aquaculture and salmon farmers
- waste stream owners
- regulators and policy advisors
The purpose of the survey is to identify the challenges and opportunities of scaling the production of insects for animal feed, as well as the barriers that might need to be overcome, and the possible solutions that could address these. These might include legislative changes to allow the use of other substrates, monetary incentives or government schemes, technological changes or advances, social or behavioural changes etc.
We invite you to participate in this study by responding to our online survey. We are looking to collect as many perspectives and experiences as possible.
The deadline for responses is Thursday 30th July 2020.
