The government have announced today (30th November) a revised Countryside Stewardship Scheme for 2018.

Additional funding has been allocated to the Hedgerows and Boundaries grant, with a higher maximum grant of £10,000.

More significant is the announcement of 4 easier to apply for “packages” which Defra and Natural England hope will encourage more farmers to apply for a basic mid-tier agreement. The packages are a pre-selected range of options for arable, lowland grazing, upland and mixed farming systems, with a simplified application form, revised evidence requirements and no competitive element. The existing Higher Tier and Mid Tier schemes remain in place for more complex applications supporting organic, water quality, historic environment situations.

It seems an online application process will be put in place. Dates for the application period have yet to be announced, but new scheme handbooks are due to be published in the New Year, and it is anticipated that the application window will be earlier than in previous years.
