ADAS is part of new initiative to explore the control of sheep scab

Published on

ADAS consultants are part of a new, exciting initiative to explore community-led approaches to effectively tackle sheep scab – a highly infectious, parasitic disease in sheep which costs the industry an estimated £70-£200 million every year.

ADAS is part of new initiative to explore the control of sheep scab

The two-year initiative will be led by the Moredun Research Institute and is funded by Defra and the EU via the Rural Development Programme for England. The project will support on-farm advice, training and testing to drive a coordinated approach to controlling sheep scab in the three focus areas in England selected for the project – The North West, Midlands (Shropshire and Herefordshire) and South West.

ADAS, alongside independent consultants Kate Phillips and Harriet Fuller will jointly coordinate the work with sheep farmers, vets and advisors in Shropshire and Herefordshire. The National Sheep Association will coordinate the work in the South West, while The Farmer Network will lead the project in the North West.

Participating farmers will be offered on-farm advice, guidance on best practice, free blood testing (using the sheep scab ELISA test developed by Moredun) and the payment of costs for vet visits. Vets and farmers will collaborate by sharing results within their cluster and undertaking practical elements required on their farms to bring sheep scab under control.

If you farm or work with farmers  in Shropshire or Herefordshire and want to know more about this project please contact Karen Wheeler, ADAS project coordinator at

This project is supported by the Rural Development Programme for England (RDPE) for which Defra is the Managing Authority, part funded (or financed) by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development: Europe investing in rural areas  (
