Regulatory Ecotoxicologist - Cambridgeshire (home working possible)

This is a senior role within our established environmental risk assessment team, and will also work closely with our other teams (aquatic ecotoxicity testing; efate and exposure; toxicology) as required. The role reports to the Head of Regulatory Risk Assessment.

Regulatory Ecotoxicologist – Cambridgeshire (home working possible)

The role

To lead the development and conduct of ecotoxicological risk assessments for plant protection products and other related chemicals.

This will involve:

  • Designing and implementing higher tier approaches, both desk-based and experimental.
  • Providing advice to clients on regulatory testing and risk assessment strategy.
  • Conducting standard and higher tier risk assessments for non-target organisms.
  • Monitoring studies to ensure adherence to guidelines and risk assessment requirements.
  • Working within the interdisciplinary CEA risk assessment problem solving team, providing innovative solutions to regulatory problems.
  • Preparing high quality dossier sections.
  • Reviewing data packages to identify knowledge and data gaps in relation to EU data requirements.
  • Acting as technical specialist for selected areas, as appropriate.
  • Representing clients in meetings with regulatory agencies.
  • Maintaining and building CEA’s reputation and relationship with clients and regulators by taking part in face-to-face meetings, conference calls and presentations, as required.
  • Project managing delivery obligations to commercial and government clients.
  • Selling consultancy through developing relationships with key clients including seeking and increasing opportunities with new clients.
  • Writing quotations and proposals for commercial clients.
  • Contributing towards the development of CEA’s marketing of risk assessment capabilities.
  • Attending relevant conferences and meetings to develop CEA’s profile.

Successful candidates will:

  • Have a relevant science degree, postgraduate qualification desirable.
  • Have a minimum of 5-10 years of experience in regulatory ecotoxicology, either gained within industry, consultancy or a regulatory agency.
  • Have an understanding of the requirements for successful consultancy.
  • Have higher tier expertise in one or more of the following areas of testing and risk assessment: pollinators, endocrine disruptors, aquatic organisms, birds and mammals, non-target arthropods, soil organisms, non-target plants, ecological and/or population modelling.
  • Have experience in regulatory submissions, including preparing and/or reviewing regulatory ecotoxicology dossier sections.
  • Work with clients to scope, plan, manage and drive projects through to completion.  This will involve organising and monitoring to ensure that work is completed to the required regulatory and other standards, is delivered on time, meets the project profit target, and delivered to the client’s satisfaction.
  • Through a good understanding of the market place, competitors and market rates, achieve team and personal sales targets through building good client relationships and undertake sales activities to find and develop new clients.

Recent project examples of the type you may be responsible for include:

  • Review of aquatic ecotoxicity data, designing additional single species invertebrate studies and/or modified exposure studies, use of results in risk assessment.
  • Conduct bird and mammal risk assessment, design and monitoring of field testing programme to refine exposure and effect estimates.
  • Review of NTA field data, preparation of rebuttal, preparation of extrapolation argumentation from study crop to GAP crops, comment on protocol for new field study.
  • Review of endocrine studies, preparation of position paper.
  • Attend pre-submission meeting, present ecotoxicity testing and risk assessment strategy for insecticide, advise client on future actions.
  • Prepare ecotoxicity section for EU renewal dossier, including higher tier risk assessments for all major groups (including reference to field studies).
