Assistant Archaeology Consultant

The role

To work flexibly on a wide variety of archaeological and environmental consultancy contracts in a fast-moving, client focussed commercial environment. This is initially a six-month contract, with the possibility of moving into a permanent role.

We will consider applications from candidates who are based in other parts of England, in particular in the south-east and the Midlands.

We will provide full PPE, laptop and work mobile as standard. Accommodation and car hire will be paid for fieldwork jobs as and when required.

The role will involve

  • Carrying out archaeological and cultural heritage desk studies, consultations, research, data management and analysis and report writing, liaising with client and statutory bodies as necessary.
  • Producing WSIs, carrying out archaeological watching briefs and producing fieldwork reports and archiving for small-scale projects.
  • Carrying out archaeological and cultural heritage desk studies, consultations, research, data management and analysis and report writing, liaising with client and statutory bodies as necessary.
  • Assisting in the management of historic environment, archaeology and other contracts, liaising with internal and external deliverers, third parties and clients.
  • Assisting with the project management of sub-contractors carrying out watching briefs, trial trenching evaluations, geophysical surveys and strip, map and sample excavations
  • Carrying out and supporting sales activities, such as drafting quotes.

Successful candidates will

  • Produce WSIs, carrying out archaeological watching briefs and producing fieldwork reports and archiving for small-scale projects in accordance with the relevant legislation, planning policy and CIfA standards and guidance.
  • Using your knowledge of archaeology and cultural heritage, carry out desk studies, consultations, research, data management and analysis and report writing.  This will involve ensuring that work is completed to the required legislative standard, is delivered on time, meets the project profit target, and is delivered to the client’s satisfaction.   
  • Write and produce concise, accurate archaeological and cultural heritage reports that are compliant with relevant legislation and planning policy, and meet the needs of the client, both in terms of satisfaction and client deadlines.
  • Write cultural heritage chapters for Environmental Impact Assessments ensuring that legislative guidelines are met.
  • Deliver small and medium-sized archaeology projects ensuring that work is delivered on time, within budget and meets the client’s satisfaction. 
  • Achieve team sales targets through building good client relationships and undertaking sales activities such as writing proposals and approaching new clients

Other requirements

  • A full driving licence will be required as will the need for flexible working with regard to type of work, timing and location. Occasional weekend work may be required, which will be agreed in advance
  • Working knowledge of ArcGIS is desirable
  • 1-2 years’ previous professional experience working in an archaeological fieldwork or heritage consultancy role
  • A valid CSCS card
  • Demonstrable experience of writing high-quality technical reports, for example, desk-based assessments, archaeological fieldwork reports, for archaeological fieldwork and/or heritage consultancy projects is desirable
  • Practitioner Level of the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists (PCIfA)
